As I write, I am trusting that the brutal cold of last month is behind us. Whew! It seemed long and relentless.
I think it’s safe to turn to warmer thoughts as we begin the month of February – the month that holds Valentine’s Day. Philosophers, religious writers, Hallmark, and poets, write beautifully about the beauty and transformative power of love.
The month of February always makes me pause and consider the topic of love. On Valentine’s Day, we may celebrate the beauty and power of love with cards, candy, and red roses. It’s a wonderful tradition that brings joy to many. But when I look around our community, I realize that love is a verb. An active verb.
Day in and day out we see acts of service and love offered by so many to each of us. The school teacher who comes to the classroom prepared to instruct the children of others. The snow plow driver who arises early to clear the roads so we can safely get around. The shopkeeper who keeps their doors open and works to provide great customer service. Tutors who help people earn their GEDs. Members of religious congregations that hold one another in prayer and serve those in need. Naturalists who unlock the mysteries of nature so we can appreciate it more.
It’s easy to spot acts of kindness and love every day at The Andover Public Library. Parents and grandparents bring their children in to help them develop a love of reading. Members of our Friends of the Library give a great deal of time and resources to help keep the library strong and vibrant. Guest speakers come and enthusiastically and generously share their knowledge about a topic with you. Members of the staff organize unique events, craft activities, children’s story hours, or help you copy items or help you figure out how to use your smart phone. They’re always looking for new ideas that they think you’ll enjoy. Keep an eye out for upcoming events. They’ve
got some great ones planned.
In Kate DiCamillo’s young adult book, The Puppets of Spelhorst, the king offers a special blessing on the people. He does so with these words: “…May you always look upon the moon and the stars and the sun with wonder. May you journey out into the great wide world. And wherever you go, may you love without regret – for that is the greatest glory there is.”
As always, thank you for supporting the Andover Public Library. This month, take a look around in your circle of influence. When you see someone who is quietly performing an act of service – an act of love – tell them “Thanks.” It is love that makes the world go round. May you share and discover lots of love in the upcoming month.
Sincerely,
Nancy Logan, Director
