OK, I can hear the groans from here. But hang on a moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The first day of winter is also the beginning of longer days and shorter nights.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s remember, as Hal Borland says, \u201cno winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0To get to spring, we just need to lean into winter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Author Parker Palmer writes that winter can offer many gifts. \u201cIt comes when the sky is clear, the sun is brilliant, the trees are bare\u2026it is the gift of utter clarity\u2026and a reminder that times of dormancy and deep rest are essential to all living things.\u201d So use this winter to take some time to get some extra rest. Curl up with a good book. Browse through the seed catalogs. Learn something new. No need to rush. Just pour yourself another cup of tea, sit in front of the fire, and enjoy winter\u2019s quiet moments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">This month many people will be celebrating their treasured religious and spiritual practices like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. It\u2019s been said that this is a time of year when the entire world is engaged in a conspiracy of hope.\u00a0\u00a0Where would we be without hope?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">And where would we be without our snowy winters? Like someone once wrote, \u201cwhen it snows, I have two choices: shovel or make snow angels.\u201d And let\u2019s remember the Japanese proverb, \u201cone kind word can warm three winter months.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Kahlil Gibran shares\u00a0\u00a0his observation that \u201ckindness is like snow \u2013 it beautifies everything it covers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Thanks to each of you for supporting the Andover Public Library, for all the acts of kindness you extend to make our community stronger and more beautiful.\u00a0\u00a0Have a safe winter season.
